Galenaea is a small kingdom located in the northern part of present-day Alaska. It is known for its naval fleet, currently under the command of Admiral Sethos Falour, and the crystal mines on the island of Faberzhe, managed by Governor Taranis Adelstan. The kingdom’s primary industry has been the mining and trading of its mineral resources and precious stones, but its last two rulers - Velibor, and his son, the boy-king Ardeshir - have begun to shift its focus towards military conquest and territorial expansion, eyeing the more agriculturally suited temperate lands down south.
Cade is the only son of Vasilef Callistarte, one of the naval infantry captains. His mother is unknown - a circumstance that is unfortunately not surprising, as his father is known throughout the kingdom as a womanizer - and he was literally left on the doorstep of the Callistarte mansion in a basket. What was surprising was that Vasilef actually acknowledged the baby as his own, even if the only proof of the boy’s lineage was his good looks.
As heir to a distinguished noble house, much was expected from Cade, and he was provided with some of the finest tutors and trainers to help prepare him for the future. He became fluent in Old World (the surviving form of English), learned different combat techniques and military tactics, and was even taught the fine art of politics and dealing with the high society, although he loathed how pretentious and superficial it all was. (He is actually quite the dancer, and can also play the flute rather well.)
Cade is considered a black sheep of the Galenaean noble community, but not in the way his father is. While he certainly has his old man’s charm, his questionable ancestry has always been a sore spot for the other noble families, and, stuck-up as most of them are, they actually blamed him for it. He was also frequently bullied by his peers for having been abandoned by his mother, and since he was lanky as a kid, he was pretty easy to beat up on a regular basis. Then he would get a beating at home - courtesy of his grandfather, Gethin - for not being able to stand up for himself. So he ended up spending most of his time either in his room, or sneaking out to play with some of the servants’ children.
For all of the unpleasantness of his childhood, however, he grew up to be kind and caring, especially towards the weak and the defenseless. His nursemaid, Aghorah, particularly influenced him, and he came to think of her as a mother figure. Gethin eventually sacked her, but Cade never forgot her and her teachings.
Cade was 16 when the proverbial turning point in his life came. His father had been summoned to the Faberzhe Mines, and Vasilef, in turn, had invited Cade to join him. En route, however, they were ambushed by bandits, and the boy was taken, to be held for ransom. But the ransom money never came, and he would have been killed if not for the intervention of one of the bandit leaders - which turned out to be Aghorah, his former nursemaid. He would also later find out that she was a member of a resistance movement against Galenaea, and she had infiltrated the bandit gang to be in the position to effectively gather intel.
He stuck with Aghorah and her band of misfits for years, sharing their outlaw status, getting into all sorts of trouble, building his skills as a fighter. But when he was 23, they received word that Galenaea was preparing to go to war against its neighbor and trade partner across the sea, Apodeia, and having committed himself to the rebel cause, he agreed to be their spy... and return home to Galenaea.
Everyone, of course, was shell-shocked. Vasilef’s scrawny son, the boy they’d abandoned, was alive. And he was someone to be reckoned with, now.
